Tips to prepare you in case of a postal disruption
UPDATE {September 1, 2016}: Canada Post has reached a deal with the union, averting a strike. Whew! We can all breathe easier.
There’s a potential lockout looming at Canada Post beginning August, 2016. What does this mean for you, when mailing your invitations and receiving your guests responses?
Here are some tips to deliver your invitations to your guests:
- Organize a get-together at a coffee shop – Schedule two locations/dates so people have a choice as to where to meet you, with a couple of different times for each location and ask people to meet you so you can deliver your beautiful invitations to them.
- Throw a barbecue – It’s summer. Perfect time to get the family together before your big day. Invite family and friends over and when they are there, hand out your invitations. For out-of-town guests, I suggest sending via FedEx/UPS/DHL.
- Hand them out at your bridal shower.
In any case, you will get to see your guest reaction to your beautiful invitations.
Whatever you do, don’t trust other people to give your invitations to others. The last thing you need is your aunties not receiving your invitation or receiving it late. If you absolutely must have others drop it off for you, give the guest a courtesy call to let them know “so and so will be dropping off my invitations to you as there is a postal strike” and don’t forget to follow up within a few days to make sure they received the invitations.

Tips for getting responses from your guests:
- Invite your guests to respond via a wedding website, call or email. If responding via email, please set up a separate email address for your wedding.
- If your invitations and rsvp cards are already printed, put an extra card in the envelope letting people know that due to a Canada Post disruption, please respond via wedding website/call/email.
Let’s hope Canada Post doesn’t get locked out and these tips will not be needed.
